Baby First Program (Edmonton)
 • The Baby First program is a partnership between Alberta Health Services and St. John Ambulance in which instructors teach how to recognize breathing emergencies, the skills to apply when an infant is choking, and CPR skills to the parents/caregivers of tiny patients at the Royal Alex and Stollery Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) in Edmonton.

• St. John Ambulance developed the non-certified course based on the NICU’s request for a practical and demonstration-based program.

• The Baby First program began on site at the Royal Alexandra Hospital September, 2006. Since then, hundreds of parents and caregivers have taken the course.

• St. John Ambulance nationally-certified Instructors deliver CPR training to parents, grandparents and siblings - anyone who would look after the baby - in this program.

• Program instructors volunteer their services for this program and do so because they want to make a difference in the lives of these tiny patients. Many instructors have found this program has been the most rewarding teaching experience they’ve had.

• Participants practice skills needed in CPR and choking situations on infant mannikins which gives them the hands-on experience they need.

One new father who had previously taken the program was pleased that when his child seemed to be having breathing difficulties, he knew what to do. He said the training "just kicks in. You know what to look for after you've called 911"

• Participants leave with a Certificate of Participation and a First Aid for Emergencies poster - Infants and Children. The poster is available to the public from www.sja.ca/ab under Publications and Resources.
