Life - Saving Awards

Edmonton, AB June 6, 2009 - Everyday we hear about emergency incidents, but seldom do
we hear about the average person who responds to them and the heroic measures they
perform to save the lives of others. St. John Ambulance honoured three such individuals
for their courage and knowledge by presenting them with Life-saving Awards during the
Investiture Ceremonies at Government House on June 6, 2009.

Kedra, and Holly Peterson received Life-saving Awards for quickly coming to the aid of their
grandmother who had fallen and hit her head against a counter back in December, 2007.  They
realized that their grandmother, who was unconscious, could have suffered a spinal injury, so
Holly, 14 at the time, supported and steadied her grandmother’s neck, and Kedra,11, called 911.
They kept their grandmother calm by talking to her and reassuring her while they waited for
Emergency Services to arrive.

Rick Burley of Taber was also presented a Life-saving Award for his quick action in saving a
life. During a dinner meeting this past February, a fellow employee took a bite of steak and
proceeded to choke. Mr. Burley performed abdominal thrusts which dislodged the blockage.
