Life Saving Awards 2010
   Life Saving Awards Presented by St. John Ambulance  
  

EDMONTON - Six courageous people were presented with St. John Ambulance Life Saving Awards Saturday, June 5, 2010 in the Chamber of the Alberta Legislature.

The use of CPR and the knowledge of what actions to take were factors in saving lives in two separate incidents, one in Red Deer and the other in Edmonton. Darian Popadynec, Sherman Reeves and Eric Dubois of Red Deer recieved their awards for performing CPR on a collapsed co-worker in the shop area who was unconscious and not breathing.

Michelle McMorran and teammate Erin Findlay received their Life Saving Awards for performing CPR on a father who had collapsed while he was driving his family home. Michelle and Erin were at a soccer game and responded to the cries for help. The father was removed from the vehicle and CPR was performed after 911 was called.

Valerie Hall of Claresholm. AB, received a Life Saving Award for her part in saving the life of a motorcyclist who had suffered a severed arm and leg in a highway accident in BC. Valerie along with her friend Dr. Joan Gato, who received her Life Saving Award in BC, controlled the bleeding, and used other First Aid measures to help save the casualty’s life.

The Life Saving Awards are presented in the annual St. John Ambulance Investiture Ceremony.

“The Life Saving Awards are a way of acknowledging the courage, knowledge, and quick thinking of the recipients,” says David Hook, CEO of St. John Ambulance Alberta Council,
“They are extraordinary heroes.”


Awards of Excellence
Five Awards of Excellence were also presented to individuals or organizations that demonstrate excellence in a variety of areas that benefit St. John and Alberta’s communities.

The Vice-Prior’s Award for Excellence in Service to the Order was presented to Al Fraser (Sherwood Park)

The Chairman of the Board of Directors Awards for Excellence in work or Research in Health & Safety was presented to Alberta Municipal Affairs & Edmonton Fire Rescue Services for The3MinuteDrill (Edmonton)

The Dr. G.R.A. Rice Memorial Award for Excellence in Media was presented to Vince & Rose of Rock 106’s Big Breakfast Show (Lethbridge)

The Lyle E. Sproat Award for Excellence in Teaching was presented to James Balmer
(Medicine Hat)

The Edgar L. Boyd Award for Excellence in Volunteering was presented to Teresa Kwong (Calgary)

Investiture
The Order of St. John Investiture Ceremony recognizes the outstanding contributions
of St. John Ambulance volunteers throughout Alberta. During the ceremony, Glen Larson
(Edmonton) and Travis Lanoway (Calgary) were invested into the Order of St. John and Sol Rolingher, a well-know Edmonton lawyer, was promoted to Knight of the Order.

His Honour, Donald Ethell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, presided over the ceremonies.
The Order of St. John received a Royal Charter from Queen Victoria in 1888 and, today, is one of only five Crown Orders administered on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. (The other four National Orders are The Order of Canada, The Order of Military Merit, The Order of Merit of the Police Forces, and The Royal Victorian Order.) Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, is the Prior and Chief Officer of the Order of St. John of Canada. His Honour, Colonel (Ret’d) the Honourable Donald S. Ethell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, is the Queen’s Representative for the Province of Alberta.

The mission of St. John Ambulance is to enable Canadians to improve their health, safety and quality of life by providing training and community services.
