Instructor Bulletins - Provincial First Aid Timelines Update / TILMA

Provincial First Aid/CPR Course Time Lines Update                    June 29, 2008

As many of you are aware on April 1, 2009, the Alberta and BC provincial governments ratified the Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA).

This agreement has impacted First Aid training in a number of ways. Firstly, is the portability of certificates. If an individual has a valid current First Aid certificate from a
Work Safe BC recognized training agency and they come to Alberta, that certificate
will be recognized by Workplace Health and Safety as long as the individual’s employer
in Alberta updates their employee to any Alberta specific First Aid standards and legal requirements. This information is available on the Workplace Health and Safety website.

If an individual with a valid current First Aid certificate from an approved Alberta training agency goes to BC, they must go to a Work Safe BC approved First Aid training agency and fill out an application for Issuing Occupational First Aid Certification to Out of
Province Certificate Holders.

Work Safe BC and Workplace Health and Safety Alberta have had to adjust the content
in their recognized First Aid courses in order for First Aid certification to be transferable.
In order to comply with the changes to Workplace Health and Safety First Aid program requirements, and to maintain our training agency status as a provincially recognized
First Aid provider, we must adopt the required changes to our Emergency, Standard
and Advanced First Aid programs.

All Instructors in Alberta must be following the new content by September 1, 2009.
Please contact the program coordinator at your local St. John Ambulance centre for copies of the new time lines.

If you have any questions regarding the change in content to the programs as a result
of the TILMA agreement please contact me at Kolby.Walters@stjohn.ab.ca

Thank You,

Kolby Walters
