Project Overview

The First Aid Instructor Training In Haiti project (FAITH) is an initiative of St. John Ambulance Canada in partnership with the Haitian National Police Academy to establish a first aid training program for Cadets and members of the Haitian National Police through the development of a cadre of Instructors and Instructor Trainers and the building of administrative capacity within the Academy to sustain the training over the longer-term.  The project partnership between St. John Ambulance Canada and the Haitian National Police has been made possible through the generous financial support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT).

The Desk Officer reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer, St. John Ambulance, National Office in Ottawa, and provides administrative support to both the Project Manager and Emergency Preparedness Officer who will be located in Haiti.

 Role and Responsibilities:

The Desk Officer shall provide administrative support for the project including both narrative and financial reporting.  The Desk Officer will:

  • Provide administrative support for the project team located in Haiti
  • Prepare narrative and financial reports based on Government of Canada requirements, in collaboration with the Project Manager in Haiti
  • Manage in-Canada component of project budget
  • Coordinate procurement and delivery of project materials to Haiti
  • Act as project liaison between St. John Ambulance and project funder
  • Develop and implement communication plan for project, creating content for St. John website, newsletters, communiqués,
  • Provide support to volunteer advisory committee as required
  • Organize travel, accommodations, insurance etc. as required

     

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

The Desk Officer will possess the following:

  • Excellent human relation and interpersonal skills with a participatory, inclusive working style
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Experience in a not-for-profit organization working in the area of international development
  • Ability to develop systems that monitor and report the progress of the project and financial expenditures with the framework of a Government of Canada contribution agreement
  • Experience managing project budgets and knowledge of procurement and shipping internationally
  • Experience in developing and implementing a successful communications strategy for the project
  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience in website and database management
  • Ability to problem solve and develop creative solutions
  • Effective communication skills in both French and English, written and oral; fluency in both languages is essential

Compensation

  • Salary - $36,500 per year, 37 hour work week with some overtime, as required
  • Benefits include medical and dental
  • 3 weeks paid vacation per year

This is a one-year term position, subject to renewal for an additional year.
