Emergency Level First Aid

Designed to meet industry, business and government requirements, St. John Ambulance first aid courses are your assurance of quality, flexibility and expertise. Emergency level first aid is a state-of-the-art, modular, course of basic first aid skills and other select subjects needed to sustain life and manage the scene of an injury.

The Emergency level first aid course is built on the same required topics as the Standard level course. The course includes required topics and elective lessons as well as a written exam.

The elective lessons may be customized on private courses based on your needs. For example, companies may ask for specific lessons based in industry specific risk. Electives in a course, intended for the general public, are based on local or provincial safety regulations.

Topics that make up the Standard and Emergency level courses are outline below.

Both the Standard first aid and Emergency first aid courses include required topics. 

  1. Roles and Responsibilities of the First Aider
  2. Casualty Management – Unresponsive Casualty
  3. Casualty Management – Responsive Casualty
  4. Adult Resuscitation (includes CPR and AED)
  5. Severe Bleeding
  6. Medical Conditions 

In addition to the required topics, elective lessons are added to the program to complete the six (6) hours of student training on the Emergency level course and thirteen (12) hours on the Standard level course.* Elective topics include:

  • Infant Resuscitation
  • Secondary Survey
  • Wound Care
  • Burns
  • Eye Injuries
  • Bone and Joint Injuries
  • Chest Injuries
  • Multiple Casualty Management
  • Poisoning
  • Heat and Cold Injuries
  • Rescue Carries
  • Emergency Childbirth and Miscarriage
  • Artificial Respiration
  • Two-Rescuer CPR - Adult
