Master Corporal Michael Bursey: War Hero, Husband, Father, Son, St. John Ambulance Volunteer to Speak at 34th Annual Training for Life Conference

October 22, 2010 Gander - From October 22nd-24th the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of St. John Ambulance will host its 34th Annual Provincial Training for Life Conference in Gander at the Albatross Hotel. Highlighting this event is special guest speaker Master Corporal Michael Bursey who recently was awarded the Medal of Military Valour "for courage and decisive leadership when exposed to sustained enemy fire." Master Corporal "repeatedly returned to a burning vehicle filled with exploding ordnance, to help extract and tend to casualties." Due to his effort, five people were saved; however, three of his comrades were killed. From a very young age Michael knew he wanted to serve his community and help people in need. At the age of 10 he first joined St. John Ambulance and went on to participate and win various provincial and national first aid competitions. At the age of 12 he was the very first person in Newfoundland and Labrador to be awarded the Grand Prior Award which is only awarded to young people who have demonstrated great proficiency in first aid, health and safety. On the occasion of our 100th Anniversary, we were truly honoured to have Master Corporal Bursey speak at our awards banquet Saturday evening to share his experiences of volunteering with St. John Ambulance and how that influenced him in his career choice.

New Guidelines Aimed at Saving More lives

October 18, 2010 (Ottawa) — St. John Ambulance supports the recently released CPR guidelines particularly as they relate to compression only CPR.  Recent studies illustrate the benefit of compression-only or hands-only CPR. This technique involves pressing on the chest of a person in cardiac arrest without providing mouth-to-mouth ventilations. This technique has been shown to be of benefit in certain situations e.g. a witnessed cardiac arrest in an out-of-hospital situation, particularly where the first aider is untrained or is reluctant to provide rescue breathing.

The complete CPR technique, which includes both chest compressions and rescue breathing, is recommended for infants, children and in cases where the cardiac arrest was not witnessed or was due to special circumstances such as near-drowning. For those individuals confronted with a cardiac arrest who have not been trained, are unsure of their ability to perform CPR or are reluctant to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, compression-only CPR is recommended.

St. John Ambulance will continue to teach all CPR components in our classes including an emphasis on the early use of a defibrillator.  It is important to note that if you have had CPR training, the skills you were taught are still okay to use and by immediately beginning CPR you can make a valuable difference in helping to save a life.

Member of House of Assembly Recognizes St. John Ambulance - April 22, 2010

In Lorraine Michaels statement to Members of the House of Assembly today she recognized the longstanding success of the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of St. John Ambulance. Read her full statement below:

"Mr. Speaker, it gives me great pleasure to stand in the House today and recognize the success of the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of St. John Ambulance and congratulate them on the marking of their 100 anniversary in this Province. Mr. Speaker, today all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians understand the importance of first aid in saving lives in an emergency. One hundred years ago a group of volunteers met and agreed to work together to promote skills that would improve the health, safety and quality of life of the people of their community by providing training and community service. Could those people at that first meeting have imagined how successful their work would be? Today, St. John Ambulance trains over 25,000 people in the Province each year in courses such as: Standard First Aid, Emergency First Aid, Emergency Scene Management, Shock, Choking, CPR, Severe Bleeding, Automated External Defibrillation, and much more. If we  all think about it we do not go anywhere in this Province, no event, without seeing St. John Ambulance present.  As this is Volunteer Week, I want to congratulate the many people in my district and all over Newfoundland and Labrador who work to promote the goals of St. John Ambulance, through community service, first aid and CPR training. Volunteers are at the heart of any community and when any group of people gets together with the idea of working together to serve their community, I advise them to look to St. John Ambulance as an    inspiration. I ask all members of the House to join with me in congratulating St. John Ambulance on its 100 anniversary. Thank you, Mr. Speaker." http://www.assembly.nl.ca/business/hansard/ga46session3/10-04-22.htm
