Health and Safety Organizations Partner on West Coast - Newfoundland and Labrador - November 4, 2007
St. John’s, NL December 3, 2007 – The Newfoundland and Labrador Council of St. John Ambulance and the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety Association (NLCSA) have partnered to provide a higher level of service to the Western Region of the Province. On December 6th they will celebrate the grand opening of their new facility at 318A O’Connell Drive in Corner Brook.

Up until earlier this fall, St. John Ambulance conducted their business in the Co-op Building. However, they have recently secured a new, larger facility to meet the needs of their clients on the West Coast, given that the demand for training in this region has increased by 16% over the last number of years. As part of evaluating their West Coast Operations, Glenda Janes, Chief Executive Officer with St. John Ambulance sought a partnership with the NLCSA. “We are so pleased to share this facility with the NLCSA”, notes Janes, “and we look forward to working with our colleagues to offer customized training and services to our clients”.

St. John Ambulance is Canada’s leader in health and safety training programs, training more than 600,000 Canadians in First Aid and CPR annually. They offer the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art first aid training programs for businesses, individuals and communities. The NLCSA was formed in 1996 as an initiative of the construction industry to address the high rate of accidents and injuries that plagued the industry. They are pleased to report that tremendous progress has been made in that regard. In the last five years alone, the accident rate in the construction industry has decreased by 50%.

Up until now, the NLCSA’s only office has been in the St. John’s Metro area. “This is a significant step in advancing services to our members on the west coast” advises Jackie Manuel, CEO of the NLCSA. “We have been making efforts to provide a greater level of service to our members ‘beyond the overpass’ and this partnership with St. John Ambulance has allowed us to do that in a cost effective manner.”

The new facility with a full time staff person, two large classrooms, ample parking and is conveniently located at 318A O’Connell Drive in Corner Brook and open for business!
