Creating a Generation of Youth Prepared for Emergencies - Nova Scotia / Prince Edward Island - February 10, 2007

Halifax, NS-  Ray Roberts, President of St. John Ambulance NS/PEI Council is pleased to announce their newly formed partnerships with Girl Guides of Canada Nova Scotia Council and Scouts Canada Nova Scotia Council to provide free-of-charge first aid training to the groups’ youth members. This is one of the many initiatives St. John Ambulance is taking to prepare our youth to help others in need.

“St. John Ambulance has identified the training of youth in first aid as one of our primary objectives,” says Mr. Roberts, “Our vision is to create a safer society by having at least one person in every household trained in First Aid.”

Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death and disability among youth today. By providing first aid training to these youth, St. John Ambulance seeks to challenge the number of such incidences, as well as provide our youth with positive personal development experiences and important life and work experiences.

First aid skills have always been a part of the Scouts and Guides; however with this new partnership they will now have consistent quality training at absolutely no cost to them. Members will learn skills such as Artificial Respiration, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), first aid for choking, and severe bleeding.

“With almost 7500 members in Nova Scotia, Girl Guides is very pleased with this partnership.  It will enable our girls and women to become trained in First Aid by experienced skilled First Aid Trainers. This is another step in fulfilling our mission of challenging members in their personal development and empowering them to be responsible citizens, and to provide safe, fun, activities for our members.” says Dianne Frittenburg, Provincial Commissioner for Girl Guides of Canada,  “With this agreement, not only will our members and their families benefit from having trained First Aiders in their homes, but the many other Nova Scotians these girls and women come into contact with will also benefit.”
