Youth Services Program
St. John Ambulance’s Youth Services Program is a structured health-oriented program that provides young people with opportunities for social, educational and personal development through training, community service opportunities, leisure activities and participation at special events.

Program Details

Activities:

Participants take part in a variety of personal development activities which include, volunteer community service, camping and recreational activities, first aid and health care training.
The program has four divisions based on age of volunteers:

  • Juniors 6-10 year olds - focus on health-oriented learning and having fun.
  • Cadets 11 – 15 year olds are offered opportunities for personal development and community service. Cadets also participate in observing at community service events under the guidance of a qualified Adult member.
  • Crusaders 16 and 17 year olds are provided with more advanced first aid training and an emphasis on individual leadership qualities and performing community service.
  • Youth Leaders - provide adults age 18 and older the opportunity to take part in the administration, training and supervision of St. John Ambulance Youth Services Program participants.

Impact:

Increases the capacity of young people to take on a leadership role in their community as well as providing health and safety information.

Volunteer Requirements

We are looking for:

  • Young people with an interest in community involvement, first aid, leadership and health-care related skills development.  
  • Adults 18 years of age and older with an interest in youth development, first aid and health care who wish to provide guidance and leadership as part of St. John Ambulance’s Youth Services Program within their community.

 

Training Prerequisites:

Juniors Age 6 – 10 years

  • Participants must have written consent of a parent or guardian to participate

Cadets Age 11-15 years

  • Participants must have written consent of their parent or guardian.

Crusaders Age 16 and 17 years

  • Participants must have the written consent of their parent or guardian. Members not residing with their parent or guardian may sign on their own behalf.

Youth Leader (age 18 and older)

  • Participants must hold, as a minimum, a valid Standard First Aid Certificate.
  • Participants must have leadership training and experience

Time Requirement:

Participants generally get together weekly during the regular school calendar year to work on skill development and participate in program related activities.

All applicants aged 18 years and over, and/or upon their first appointment to a leadership position, are carefully screened in accordance with the SJA Screening Cycle Policy.
