Course Development
Quality assurance in St. John Ambulance is a formalized process that begins with nationally standardized program research and development in consultation with stakeholders and medical advisors.
St. John Ambulance CPR resources were developed in accordance with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada guidelines which are founded on the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) Consensus on Science. ILCOR members include the American Heart Association (AHA), the European Resuscitation Council (ERC), the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC), the Australian and New Zealand Committee on Resuscitation, the Resuscitation Councils of Southern Africa (RCSA) and the Inter American Heart Foundation (IAHF).
Each student is provided with theoretical and practical hands on training that are in line with adult education guidelines. The theoretical training includes lecture, reading and testing. The practical training follows theoretical and includes demonstration, hands on practice of techniques and scenarios.
Course Evaluation
All programs offer student evaluation forms to provide customer feedback, update course programs to meet customer needs and assess the delivery of the program by the instructor.
Instructor Management
Our instructors pass a pre-course "Theoretical Threshold Exam," a 35-hour instructor development course and are monitored in the classroom before being qualified to instruct unassisted. To stay qualified, instructors must teach regularly each year and be monitored.
There are two Instructor certification programs:
- Instructor Certification Program
(For people who want to become instructors in first aid and CPR.)
- Instructor-Trainer Certification Program
(An Instructor-Trainer development program.)
Certification
Every graduate of a first aid course receives a certificate with an expiry date.
Each certificate is numbered and electronically recorded in a centralized database. Should you lose or misplace your certificate, you may call your local branch for a replacement by providing your certificate number.
