THERAPY DOG PROGRAM

St. John Ambulance’s Therapy Dog Services takes a volunteer and their dog into hospitals, seniors' residences or nursing homes on a weekly basis. Partnerships have been established in these kinds of settings, where people are often restricted from having pets, to make the Therapy Dog visitation easier and on a regular basis.
This program is flourishing throughout the province. We have 105 dog-and-handler teams in Saskatchewan out of which 23 teams are certified to be around children. This service is been very well received by the facilities our teams visit and provide great emotional support to the residents.

Recently Saskatchewan Lifestyles published an article ‘Therapy dog a first for Estevan’ about our wonderful program. Another article 'Armstrong and Kai are Estevan's first dog therapy team' was published by Estevan Mercury.

FLAG RAISING FOR ST. JOHN AMBULANCE WEEK

St. John Week aims to create awareness around St. John Ambulance and its mission to educate Canadians on health and safety.
Flag raisings were held in conjunction with those cities declaring the week of June 20 as St. John Ambulance Week in recognition of our 100 years of providing service to their communities. To honour SJA, our flag is allowed to fly for the week from flag poles located at City Halls within the communities where declarations occurred.
The photographs below show our great Volunteers, Therapy Dog teams and staff raising flags in Saskatoon and Yorkton on Monday, June 20th, 2011.

The ATV features:

Belinda Mitchell, Director of Training, said that this is the first unit of its kind for St. John Ambulance in Saskatchewan and having it will make it easier to respond to medical needs during the events like Jamboree.

CAPITAL FORD SPONSORS SONNY - ST. JOHN AMBULANCE  THERAPY DOG

On January 28, 2011, Capital Ford sponsored a 1 year old Golden Retriever, Sonny, through the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program.  St. John's volunteers take their dogs into hospitals, seniors’ residence or nursing homes on a weekly basis.   Sonny was placed in the veteran unit in the Wascana Rehab hospital and brightened the lives of many.  Patients are able to interact with the dog and can benefit from this service by receiving unconditional love that is unique and special from a dog.

The goal of the Therapy dog program is to enrich the lives of patients who do not have the opportunity to interact with a dog.  Through petting, affection, and regular visitation of a dog the patients find peace in the gentle contact with the dog and in its quiet presence. Patients talk more to others, participate in activities, eat and sleep better and smile more.
