PURPOSE OF THE JOB 
The Camp Counselor works with the Camp Coordinator, St. John staff, local businesses, emergency first response teams etc. to facilitate a summer day camp program geared towards emergency first response services within our community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Assist in providing leadership to a wide variety of recreation activities and special events for Camp 911, including games, crafts, field trips, first aid scenarios, and special events in consultation with the Camp Director and St. John staff
  • Assist in assuring the safety of all campers both on-site and on field trips
  • Promote safe behaviours and improving the quality of the children’s interaction with one another
  • Assist in the coordination and development of recreation activities & the daily operations of Camp 911
  • Help promote skill development by being a mentor to all campers
  • Serve as a role model to all campers by demonstrating high standards of personal conduct
  • Effectively supervise and coach all campers
  • Participate in all activities with campers, making camp fun
  • Provide encouragement and support to all campers
  • Assist with daily attendance and welcome children each day & direct them to Camp 911 classroom
  • Supervise the campers during lunch breaks and until parents arrive for pick up
  • Refer parents of campers to Camp Coordinator or St. John staff if you are not able to answer a question
  • Attend and participate in health & safety training & Standard First Aid Level C
  • Assure that equipment and facilities are safely and properly prepared and maintained for use by program participants and staff.
  • Ensure Camp Director and St. John staff know of broken and unsafe equipment that needs to be repaired
  • Report any accidents to proper camp personnel
  • Evaluate camp activities and jointly develop improvement plans when necessary, in consultation with Camp Coordinator and St. John staff
  • Prepare written reports on all aspects of the Summer Camp Program if required
  • Participate in a post evaluation session of Camp 911
  • Maintain open communication with the Executive Director and St. John staff as necessary

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Completion or education toward a degree in the recreation or education field or in a related discipline and/or combination experience and education
  • Demonstrated 2-3 years of working with Youth
  • Patient, empathic and friendly
  • Reliable, organized and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Problem solving and conflict resolutions skills
  • Demonstrated team player
  • Current first aid & AED certificate or willingness to obtain
  • Ability to multi-task is essential

WORKING CONDITIONS & ENVIRONMENT

  • General office environment.
  • Public venues –, first response teams & venues, public recreation areas
  • Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
