Position: Youth Program Specialist
Reports to: Director of Community Programs – National Office
Location: Ottawa, ON and/or Remote
Status: Regular Full Time

Summary:

The Youth Program Specialist is responsible for providing subject matter expertise and support in the development, implementation, and sustainability of national youth programs at St. John Ambulance Canada, including but may not be limited to:  
 

  • SJA Connect, and 
  • Canadian Youth Advisory Network (part of the St. John International Youth Advisory Network)
     

As a volunteer organization, effective creation, implementation, and sustainability strategies are essential.  In this capacity, the Youth Program Specialist is responsible for the maintenance of all St. John Ambulance (SJA) youth-related programs, supporting provincial/territorial offices in the implementation and operations of those programs and to assist with future youth initiatives by supporting SJA’s position as the pre-eminent Canadian provider of community services. 

The Youth Program Specialist will assist with the creation, maintenance and interpretation of protocols, standards, and accreditation of national youth programs. This position plays an important role in fostering an atmosphere of SJA-wide cooperation and collaboration while providing quality youth programs.  

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Program Excellence and Quality Control 

  • Coordinate a comprehensive review, implementation, and maintenance of SJA national youth program(s) in collaboration with provincial/territorial offices,
  • Support provincial/territorial offices with national and approved regional youth initiatives, 
  • Become an SJA Connect facilitator to develop first-hand experience with the program to better support facilitators across Canada, 
  •  Act as the staff representative to the St. John International Youth Advisory Network, to implement key international concepts in Canadian programming. 
  • Keep abreast with, and apply concepts from, research in the fields of youth engagement, programming, and relevant youth leadership and development, 
  • Maintain a strong awareness of current trends and changes relevant to youth in Canada through consulting with peers and maintaining professional networks, 
  • Ensure national SJA youth programs focus on service delivery through the lens of equity, diversity, and inclusion, 
  • Maintain knowledge of national SJA community services policies and procedures, 
  • Assist with development and retention efforts to engage youth in additional SJA initiatives, 
  • Coordinating efforts toward innovation by evolving and communicating a clear vision for SJA youth programming, and coordinate the implementation of the agreed-upon strategies, 
  • Support fundraising, sponsorship and other financial initiatives related to youth programming,  
  • Support the preparation of reports and/or meeting materials relevant to youth programming, and 
  • Evaluate and propose potential new youth initiatives. 


Education, Training and Experience:
 

  • Advanced education and experience in leadership roles for volunteer and youth programming, 
  • Five years or more of progressive experience in youth development,   
  • Project coordination and implementation experience,  
  • Experience in provision of support to senior decision makers including proven results in drafting reports for, making presentation to and conveying strategic vision.


Knowledge/Skills:
 

  • Extensive knowledge of youth programming, volunteerism, and youth leadership development,   
  • Effective administration skills in Microsoft Suite, 
  • Fluency in English is required.  French language verbal and written skills are highly desirable, 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including conceptual, presentation and communication skills, relationship building skills, 
  • Ability to use current technologies to create training materials and programs and work in Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office Suite environments.


Working Conditions:
 

  • Schedule flexibility, and lieu time work may be required from time to time, to effectively accomplish the goals of the position, 
  • Some travel within Canada may be required, 
  • Remote work is available.
