What Do Our Scholarships Offer?

St. John Ambulance volunteers are invited to apply for one of the available scholarships tailored to support their educational aspirations in the healthcare and medical fields.

Whether you're pursuing a degree or technical certification within a four-year period, the Sidney R. Sharman Legacy Fund Scholarship and the Dr. Po Tin Chak Scholarship offer financial assistance to aid your journey in post-secondary education.

Available Scholarships:

Sidney R. Sharman Legacy Fund Scholarship

Purpose: To support St. John Ambulance volunteers pursuing post-secondary education in the healthcare field, leading to a degree or technical certification within a four-year period.

Dr. Po Tin Chak Scholarship

Purpose: To support St. John Ambulance volunteers pursuing post-secondary education in medicine, leading to a degree or technical certification within a four-year period.

 

Scholarship Proceeds:

Successful Applicants

Each successful applicant will receive a $1,000 scholarship and will be eligible for subsequent applications in each of up to 3 more years of study. 

Only ONE scholarship will be awarded to an individual student per their school year term.

Completion of a Degree or Certificate Program

Upon completion of a degree or certificate program, following at least 2 years of scholarship support, a one-time bonus of $1,000 may be awarded upon submission of certification or a completed degree letter from their school.

Our Scholarship Application Process is designed to support St. John Ambulance volunteers in their pursuit of higher education. Through a straightforward and transparent procedure, we aim to assist our dedicated members in accessing financial aid for their academic endeavours.

Are You Eligible for the Scholarship?

Exploring the possibility of receiving a scholarship through St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon? It's crucial first to understand if you meet the eligibility criteria. This section outlines the specific requirements applicants must satisfy to be considered for our scholarships.

Application Criteria:

St. John Ambulance Volunteer

  • Applicant must be an active St. John Ambulance volunteer and remain as such throughout the schooling period that covers the scholarship disbursement.
  • Applicant must have documented a minimum of 100 hours of volunteer service in the previous year.

Age Requirement

Applicant must be over 18 years of age.

Citizenship

Applicant must be a resident of British Columbia.

Grade Point Average

Sidney R. Sharman Legacy Fund Scholarship: 4.0 or higher

Dr. Po Tin Chak Scholarship: 3.5 or higher

Proof of Enrollment

Proof of enrollment or acceptance of a 4-year undergraduate degree/technical certification program related to the medicine or health care field, such as biology or pre-med.

Eligible Schools

Colleges and universities that offer a 4-year undergraduate degree or technical certification in a related field of medicine or healthcare, such as biology or pre-med. 

Recommendation

Applicant must be recommended by their respective Divisional Superintendent.

How do you apply for our scholarships?

    3. Cover Letter (with a brief outline of post-secondary pursuits and reasons why a profession in health care was chosen)
    4. Official School Transcript (signed by the registrar confirming your final grades from a recently completed school year)
    5. Recommendation Letter (from your Divisional Superintendent)
    6. Media Release Consent Form

     

    We recommend requesting your school transcript and recommendation letter as early as possible to ensure a smooth application process. These documents are crucial for your scholarship application, and obtaining them well in advance will help avoid any last-minute issues.
